PARGA

Parga is one of the most beautiful places of
Epirus, with a high development and a remarkable tourist
            activity.
Parga epitomises all that is most beautiful in Greece.
Spring comes in a blaze of wild flowers and the c ountryside
remains fresh and green throughout the summer, full of sweet scents
and birdsong.  Below the pine forests and olive groves lies a
coast laced with the long strands of a white sandy shore. Set
amongst this incredibly lovely scenery is the town itself, sheltered
behind a rocky promontory and its towering Venetian fort. On
the waterfront, canopied tavernas offer typically Greek
dishes accompanied by fine local wines, and across the harbour
colourful small boats come and go. Behind it is a fascinating maze
of small streets to explore, little shops to browse in, and
welcoming cafes and bars. The pace of life is slow and relaxed; but
in the evening there is usually music to listen to somewhere, as
well as a disco or two.
Life in Parga revolves around the beaches,
for you can choose between the pretty sandy bay in the town itself
or the idyllic, mile-long Valtos on the other side of the
headland where the water is shallow and shelves gently, making it
ideal for children. A wide selection of watersports is
usually available, including pedaloes, windsurfing and
            waterskiing.

The surrounding region is certainly worth exploring,
and excursions may be taken to the ancient theatre of Dodona,
the impressive caves of Perama, the atmospheric lakeside town
of loannina, and up the River Acheron which, according
to mythology, was the entrance to Hades! A very popular trip
is the sail to the enchanting island of Paxos.

             Relaxed,
yet lively, Parga is a resort that appeals to all age groups.
There is no mass development here, no highrise hotels - everything
has been kept attractively small. Parga has an abundance of
genuine beauty and character. Yet, in spite of all its natural
attributes, it remains surprisingly unspoiled; only for a six-week
period from the end of July does Parga become
especially busy as it fills up with Italians and Greeks on
            holiday.
